Urologist visit......

Yesterday ended up being a very long day.  We had to be at the hospital at 8 so we got there got checked in and thought that she was going in for her procedure at 9 but at 9 they came in and told us that he would be 30-45 minutes late.  So we went into the play area so Mae could keep her mind off food.  She did so good at this we were so proud of her she only asked for a drink one time!!  She went in for surgery at about 9 and it only took a few minutes and the doctor came and talked to us and said that we have a very sweet little girl and he said that she did very well.  When he went in and looked at her bladder he said that he could see evidence of previous UTI’s and that he would talk to us again after the radiology report.  Then they called us back to radiology.  Only one of us could go in so I went and that was very difficult for Mae she was crying so hard for one she was coming out of antistesia and for 2 she had a catheter in.  A different doctor then came in and ran some dye through the catheter and watched how it went through her system.  She cried so hard when this was being done and she just wanted to be held.  So then we went back to recovery and sat in there for about an hour and a half when finally the doctor called and told me that they were going to refer us to Iowa City to see a pediatric urologist.   On Mae’s left kidney she has a duplicated collecting system, which after a couple of calls today I am understanding it a little bit better.  She has 2 ureters coming out of one kidney (you should only have 1)  and about two thirds the ways down they connect and they become one and she has reflux which means that when she goes to the bathroom some urine goes back up into her kidneys instead of all coming out her bladder.  So for now she will be on a regular antibiotic for 10 days and then she will go on a low dose antibiotic to keep her from getting another infection.  We are currently scheduled to go to Iowa City in August but the scheduler that I have been talking to is telling me that they will probably move up the appointment once they have all of her reports from yesterday so now we will have to wait and see.  The doctor had mentioned that they may have to do surgery or they may decide just to watch it but he definitely felt that she should be seen by a pediatric doctor so that is what we are doing.  I have her 3 year check up on the 23rd so hopefully I will be able to discuss some of this with her regular doctor and maybe he can explain to me what he understands.
